Day 12: My Autism Video Diary – It’s Alien DNA! Humor Saves the Day with my Struggling Learners!

Ok, here’s another homeschooling post about my boys.  Our DNA project turned out to be pretty hard for them…but how do we get through tough days?  Humor!

What’s interesting is that, although, the type of humor is different, this works a lot of the time with Abbey too!  She has a very different and unique sense of humor, as do my boys, but it gets us through some tough things and helps us have FUN together!!

Day 8: My Autism Diary – Homeschooling my Struggling Learners

Ok, so today’s post isn’t about Abbey.  What was on my mind was homeschooling my boys, one of which is diagnosed with high functioning autism.  And, it’s good to ‘mix it up’ a bit every once in a while, right?

Abbey’s brothers have strengths and weaknesses just like Abbey, just like every child.  My son with autism is so fascinated with history and it makes a subject that’s never been a favorite of mine, fun!  But, boy does he struggle in other areas, making it hard sometimes, but always interesting!

Candy, maybe too motivating?? Seizing Opportunities!! Day 7: My Autism Video Diary

Yesterday turned out to be a fun day, well most of it!  We went to a ‘trunk or treat’ event at our local autism center, The Responding to Autism Center.  My oldest son with high functioning autism put on ‘his idea’ of a costume and went to help out with one of the games for the kids, but ended up hanging out with his friends, from social skills classes, that showed up, for most of the time….which was really neat to watch.  My oldest kiddo, Maggie, almost 18 now also came and helped out with games.  I was so impressed with all the teenagers there, how great they were with the kids.  I saw lots of kiddos having a great time and a couple struggling…but a nice safe, understanding place to do it in!

So, Abbey participated in a new way this year, which was very exciting!  I added a folder to her Proloquo2Go on her iPad with the buttons, ‘trick or treat’ and ‘thank you.’  She caught on VERY quickly, that she received candy when she did this and had a big smile on her face….stay tuned for a blog post about this, WITH a very cute video!  And, yes, my Proloquo2Go peeps, I added the ‘thank you’ with expression, so super duper, extra cute!:)
